Dr. Gavilán is a Ramon & Cajal Research Fellow in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where she leads the NanoColloids & Magnetism group. Her research focuses on the development of MNPs for magnetic hyperthermia, photothermal therapy, drug delivery and tracers for magnetic particle imaging. She is the Principal Investigator of national and European projects, including AMULET, DREAM-Nano, and AniMAG, and serves as both a working group leader and management committee member of the European COST Action NexMPI. She has published more than 30 papers with over 1,600 citations and holds two patents. Her work reflects a strong commitment to advancing Nanotheranostics through interdisciplinary collaboration and international engagement.

This talk will focus on Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which have emerged as a powerful tool in nanomedicine, particularly for magnetic hyperthermia, a non-invasive cancer therapy that uses alternating magnetic fields to generate localized, tumor-destroying heat. However, the therapeutic efficiency of MNPs depends strictly on their magnetic properties, which are dictated by their precise physical dimensions and geometry, among other physical-chemical parameters. Dr. Gavilán will introduce advanced chemical synthesis methodologies optimized to achieve exceptional control over nanoparticle size, shape, and crystalline uniformity, focusing on iron oxide nanocubes and other shapes as efficient heat-generation and magnetic particle imaging (MPI) agents.
