Hamilton Varela, Dr. rer. nat., is a Full Professor and Director of the São Carlos Institute of Chemistry at the University of São Paulo (IQSC/USP). With extensive international experience across Europe and Asia, his research focuses on electrocatalysis and the interconversion of chemical and electrical energy. He directs international affairs for the RCGI (Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Innovation) and is recognized among the top 1.5% of influential researchers in the energy sector. Beyond his laboratory, Professor Varela leads institutional initiatives in research integrity and high-level university administration.

内容摘要:

The interconversion between chemical and electrical energy lies at the core of the global transition toward a sustainable future. In this context, mastering the electro-oxidation of energy carriers—specifically small organic molecules—is of paramount importance. This lecture presents new mechanistic insights achieved by integrating bench-scale experiments with numerical simulations, with a particular focus on the oscillatory regime. We demonstrate how self-organized instabilities expose "hidden" reaction features that remain obscured under steady-state conditions, providing a unique lens through which to view complex reaction networks. Through case studies on formic acid, methanol, and ethanol, we reveal how oscillations, chaos, and transient regimes provide access to realistic rate constants. These findings serve as a foundation for the design of robust, high-performance electrocatalysts for renewable-driven systems. Finally, perspectives are discussed within the broader context of the evolving energy landscape.
