Prof. Matthias Beller obtained his Ph.D. from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 1989. After a postdoctoral stint at MIT, he worked at Hoechst AG from 1991 to 1995. He later held professorships at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Rostock. From 2005 to 2023, he served as the founding director of the Leibniz-Institut für Katalyse (LIKAT), where he remains a department head. Prof. Beller has been a Fellow of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) since 2002, the Academy of Sciences Hamburg since 2008, the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) since 2009, and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences since 2015. He has published in excess of 1200 papers with an h-index of 164 and 108,900 citations, in addition to 16 books or book chapters and over 200 granted patents.

The use of renewables, waste, and carbon dioxide for the cost-effective and waste-free synthesis of materials, life science goods and all kinds of organic products can be an important part to achieve a circular economy in the future. In this respect, efficient catalytic reductive transformations of CO2 offer interesting possibilities to replace existing industrial carbonylations. Nowadays, in the chemical industry, carbonylation processes constitute the largest applications of homogeneous catalysts and many bulk and fine chemicals are produced by such transformations. In the talk, various possibilities to use green CO from CO2/H2 mixtures, formic acid as CO surrogate or directly CO2 will be shown. Crucial for all these reactions is the development of modern catalysts. By rational design novel ligands and complexes have been synthesized, which allow for unprecedented efficiency in such transformations. Both industrially relevant processes as well as interesting carbonylation reactions for modern organic synthesis will be presented. Furthermore, it will be shown how carbon dioxide itself can contribute to realize CO2-neutral energy technologies.
